On the Road or Through the Skies: Navigating Your Journey to Disney World
Embarking on a magical journey to Disney World?
The first decision on your enchanted map is whether to soar through the skies or hit the open road. Let’s unravel the pros and cons of each route, ensuring your adventure begins on the right track.
Driving to Disney: A Magical Road Trip
Pros:
- Savings Spell: Driving offers a budget-friendly enchantment, saving you those extra golden coins. Driving to Disney is exponentially cheaper than flying if you have a family of 6 like we do. Even if each flight is less than $100 per person, that is still $500-$600 per flight. Gas is half that from where we live. (Check the chart below for our real world example!)
- Car Convenience: Having a carriage (car) at your disposal during your stay grants you the freedom to explore beyond the kingdom. We love to head to Disney Springs, or even sometimes places to eat that are in Orlando. Also you can pack everything you need in the car and don’t have to worry about getting too many souveniers! I am a fan of packing light no matter which way you choose to travel, but I do love the ability to not worry about weight or size while driving the car. Also, if you are going to multiple parks outside of Disney (such as SeaWorld or Universal Studios) having that car makes traveling much easier and less expensive. Those ubers add up! **Side note: Additional benefit to having a Disney annual pass, you get free park parking!
Cons:
- Time-Turner Tolls: The journey may take a bit longer, so prepare for a longer adventure on the winding road. From where we live it takes about 12 hours to head to Disney World. We have found that there are two ways to best take that trip. That is one lonnnnng trip in a day, or we split it up with an overnight stop to break up the drive. Usually we can find a hotel for around $100 on the way, which still brings our total to less than a flight (consult the spreadsheet below to see how!)
- Packing Magic: While unlimited packing is tempting, consider whether you truly need that enchanted wardrobe. Sometimes the freedom to pack everything, means you pack EVERYTHING. In this case, less could be more.
Flying to Disney: A Skyward Voyage
Pros:
- Express Enchantment: Flying whisks you away to the magic kingdom in the blink of a pixie’s eye. A few hours on a plane is nice compared to a full day’s drive in terms of time spent traveling.
- Lighter Load: Packing with intention means less baggage to worry about and more room for enchanted souvenirs. When you pack to fly, you take less and leave space for all your extras!
Cons:
- Carriage Conundrum: No magical carriage awaits upon landing. You’ll need to rely on rental carriages or enchanted transportation options. This is mostly inconveneint if you’re staying off property. On property there is free transportation to and from the parks.
- Costly Clouds: Flying can sometimes be pricier, so be prepared to part with a few extra golden feathers. There is no question that driving is the thriftier way to go. Access the chart below to see real world examples!
In the end, we offer choices so you can choose what’s best for you! Every sorcerer must choose the right spell for their own sojourn. 99% of the time this family chooses to drive, because we love to save those golden feathers!
